Reece James, a Chelsea native, made a long-term commitment to the team on Tuesday by agreeing to a lucrative new six-year contract for £250,000 a week, making him the highest-paid defender in club history.

Mason Mount, a fellow youth standout, is also reportedly in contract negotiations with the west London club as new owner Todd Boehly aims to lock down the team’s best players for the foreseeable future.

Mendy’s current contract, which he signed when he joined from Rennes in September 2020, runs until 2025. Despite recent losses for his team due to mistakes, manager Thomas Tuchel defended his No. 1.

Thomas Tuchel, the manager of the Blues, backed Mendy despite recent mistakes that cost his team.

In an effort to retain its best players, the London club recently signed Reece James (left) to new terms and is allegedly eager to extend Mason Mount’s contract (right).

So, this is what you need from leaders and goalkeepers as well—that they have the right kind of momentum so that whatever mistakes they make won’t be penalized.

“Now, he receives a lot of punishment for little to no wrongdoing, but I have no doubts.”

The environment is tranquil. We have two outstanding goalkeepers who are both outstanding men. We are aware that [Mendy] is in a similar circumstance, but we first deal with it internally before informing you.

On Tuesday night, Tuchel’s team plays its first Champions League group-stage match against Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.
