Chelsea has been given a hefty inducement to finally sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica before the January transfer window closes.

After performing well for Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar, the 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge recently.

Before the end of the month, the Blues are anticipated to make another offer for Fernandez to the Portuguese powerhouses.

Before the new year, Chelsea made the midfielder a top priority and engaged Benfica in several rounds of contract negotiations.

However, a deal fell through when Benfica refused to budge from their £105 million value, which the west Londoners were unwilling to match.

Todd Boehly has been given an incentive to close a deal before the end of the month, but Chelsea have renewed negotiations to sign Fernandez because Graham Potter is in severe need of a new midfielder.

The Times reports that UEFA authorities intend to cap the number of years that a player’s transfer cost can be spread out at five.

According to the article, a new regulation will be implemented before the summer transfer window as a result of multiple teams raising issues with the European regulatory body regarding Chelsea’s operations.

David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix (on loan from Atletico Madrid), Noni Madueke, and Mykhailo Mudryk are just a few of the players the Blues have signed in January. And the last of the six has generated a lot of controversy.

When Mudryk joined from Shakhtar Donetsk, he signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract, the longest in Premier League history. Additionally, to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, the transfer fee payment for the winger is being amortized over the course of the deal.

The yearly payment calculation would have been substantially greater if the 22-year-old had agreed to a shorter contract, which would have made it much more difficult to adhere to FFP laws.

According to FIFA, player contracts should be a maximum of five years long, unless local regulations specify otherwise. There are no limitations or restrictions in the United Kingdom.

According to The Times, UEFA won’t stop the Blues from amortizing the contracts of the players they have already signed. However, a new policy that will go into effect in the summer compels Boehly to sign Fernandez in January so that he can take advantage of the loophole he has been employing before it is closed.
