Professionally known as Coolio, Artis Leon Ivey Jr. (August 1, 1963 – September 28, 2022) was an American rapper, actor, and record producer. With the releases of his albums It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995), and My Soul (1996), Coolio became a well-known artist in the middle to late 1990s (1997). His most famous song, “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which won a Grammy Award in 1995, as well as the singles “Fantastic Voyage” (1994), “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” (1996), and “C U When U Get There,” are what made him most well-known (1997).

He is particularly well-known for writing the theme song “Aw, Here It Goes!” for the Nickelodeon television series Kenan & Kel, which debuted in 1996. Since 1996, Coolio has independently published CDs. He also trained as a chef, becoming the subject of the online series Cookin’ with Coolio and a cookbook. Ivey initially gained notoriety while performing with WC and his brother Crazy Toones in the Gangsta rap trio WC and the Maad Circle.

In 1987, Coolio released his debut single, “Whatcha Gonna Do?” In 1988, he collaborated with Nu-Skool to produce “What Makes You Dance (Force Groove).” In 1991, Coolio joined the WC and the Maad Circle group, which was led by rapper WC, thanks to connections he developed in the L.A. rap scene. On the group’s debut album Ain’t a Damn Thing Changed, he is listed as a co-contributor, including on the song “Dress Code.”

In order to raise awareness of global warming among students at historically black colleges and institutions, the organization Environmental Justice and Climate Change hired Coolio and jazz saxophonist Jarez as spokespersons in July 2008. Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America spokesperson Coolio. He claimed that both he and his kids have asthma. On September 28, 2022, Coolio was found unconscious on the bathroom floor while visiting a buddy. Upon arrival, first responders declared him dead. Although no foul play is suspected, the police have begun an inquiry into his death, and according to Coolio’s management, he appears to have had a cardiac attack.

Coolio Recognitions and Awards

A number of accolades were bestowed to Coolio’s 1995 song “Gangsta’s Paradise,” including Best Rap Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards and Best Rap Video and Best Video from a Film at the MTV Video Music Awards. At the American Music Awards in 1996, Coolio won Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist, among other accolades. For Gangsta’s Paradise, Best Rap Solo Performance for “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New),” and Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for “Stomp,” Coolio was nominated for three Grammy Awards in 1997. In total, Coolio won five trophies out of his fourteen nominations.
