Benjamin Mendy is taking legal action against Manchester City, seeking compensation for unpaid wages amounting to millions.

Benjamin Mendy is taking legal action against Manchester City, seeking compensation for unpaid wages amounting to millions.

Benjamin Mendy, the former left-back for Manchester City, is pursuing a “multi-million pound” legal action against the club for unpaid wages.

The 29-year-old faced charges of rape and sexual assault in August 2021, stemming from an alleged incident at his Cheshire home nine months prior. Manchester City suspended Mendy pending trial. Despite denying all allegations, Mendy was acquitted in January 2023 of seven counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Chester Crown Court. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on an additional count, leading to a retrial in June, where Mendy was ultimately cleared of both charges.

During court proceedings, Mendy revealed that Manchester City had halted his £100,000-per-week wages in September 2021. Subsequently, he was released on a free transfer in the summer once his contract concluded. Nick De Marco KC, representing Mendy, confirmed the pursuit of a claim against the club for unauthorized wage deductions in a statement to Sky Sports News.

From September 2021, Manchester City FC ceased payment of any wages to Mr. Mendy, despite his subsequent acquittal of various charges. This period extended until the conclusion of his contract in June 2023. The case is set to be presented before an Employment Tribunal.

Initially, Mendy was the Premier League’s priciest defender, with City investing £52 million to secure his transfer from Monaco in 2017. Currently, he is a player for Lorient in Ligue 1, having joined as a free agent.
