Sunny Adé is an Omoba of the Yoruba people, having been born in Osogbo to a Nigerian royal family from Ondo and Akure.

His father was a church organist, and his mother was a trader named Maria Adegeye (née Adesida). His mother’s relatives included her father, Oba Adesida I, who was a member of the Adesida dynasty (who ruled Akure for 60 years).

It would subsequently include Oba Adebiyi Adegboye Adesida Afunbiowo II, her nephew and Adé’s cousin, who also served as monarch of Akure.

King Sunny Ade went to an Ondo grammar school but dropped out after a few years to join the Federal Rhythm Dandies, a Lagos-based highlife band.

Sunny Adé developed his own backup band, known as the African Beats, in 1967. Sunny Adé joined to Island Records in 1982 after gaining national success in Nigeria during the 1970s and established his own independent label.

With the albums Juju Music (1982) and Synchro System (1983), he acquired international popularity; the latter earned him a Grammy nomination, a first for a Nigerian musician. His album Odu received a Grammy nomination in 1998.
