Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has warned manager Ruben Amorim that his midfield setup could be exposed by Arsenal and Manchester City.

Amorim secured his first victory as United boss on Thursday evening, guiding the team to a 3-2 comeback win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. For the match, Manuel Ugarte and captain Bruno Fernandes were deployed in central midfield, with Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho playing off striker Rasmus Højlund.

However, Hargreaves believes Amorim needs to reconsider his midfield formation when United face top Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester City.

“I don’t think he has the same personnel that he had at Sporting,” Hargreaves noted. “If you’re going to play with two in midfield, they need to be super-athletes who can cover the distances, and I’m not sure they have that. They have some very good players, but they’re different types. Amorim might need to adjust by having one of the No.10s drop deeper or pushing the wing-backs higher for width.”

Hargreaves continued, “Playing with just two in midfield against Arsenal or Manchester City will be really difficult. It’s a work in progress, so we need to be patient, but we’re getting there,” he added, speaking on TNT Sports.
