Daley Blind, a former Manchester United player, maintains that Andre Onana is a “great” goalkeeper, despite his challenging start at Old Trafford.

The pressure is mounting on the Cameroon international at United following his summer transfer from Inter.

Onana arrived with the task of replacing the error-prone David de Gea, but he has already faced criticism for several mistakes. His most recent error occurred when he inadvertently deflected a weak Leroy Sane shot into his own net during the 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. This high-profile mistake followed another humiliating moment during the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League back in August.

Blind played alongside the 27-year-old at Ajax for four years before the shot stopper joined Inter.

The Netherlands international, who is now at La Liga side Girona, has full faith in his old team-mate to come good, saying he is a “complete” goalkeeper who can be relied on when he “has his head right”.

“He’s one of the great goalkeepers in the world,” Blind told The Athletic. “He has a nonchalance, he’s complete and when he has his head right he can be one of the best goalkeepers. He’s a winner. Always wants to train more. I had a good relationship with him.”

Onana will hope to prove Blind correct by putting in a strong performance when United take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday.
